An Audiologist is a healthcare professional who has completed at least 6 years of college education and holds either a Master’s degree or Doctoral degree in Audiology. Audiologists are trained to test for all types of hearing loss, diagnose and manage hearing loss, and recommend the most suitable treatment for each patient’s lifestyle and budget.

At Tampa Hearing Services, we use state of the art equipment to evaluate your hearing so we can make the most appropriate recommendations for your hearing healthcare needs. We also have Board Certified Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialists on site to see you by appointment if further evaluation is needed.

What does a basic hearing evaluation consist of?

When you come in for a hearing evaluation, the Audiologist will look in your ears to make sure the ear canals are clear of any debris or cerumen.

Pure tone testing: Pure tone testing using earphones will be performed. You will listen to a series of tones at frequencies ranging from 250 Hz to 8000 Hz so we can plot the softest sounds you can hear on a graph called an audiogram.

Speech audiometry: The audiologist will determine the softest level at which you can repeat two syllable words. You will then repeat words back so we can determine your understanding ability of speech at a comfortable listening level. This is called your word recognition score. Understanding of speech and hearing are very different.

Immittance testing: The audiologist will place a soft probe tip up to the ear canal to determine the movement of the eardrum and to see if the middle ear system is working correctly.
